Tasmania, with its diverse landscapes and breathtaking scenery, has become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, including mountain biking fanatics.
If you're planning a family adventure filled with adrenaline-pumping rides and unforgettable moments, you're in for a treat. We’ve compiled a list of the top Tasmanian mountain bike trails that are perfect for families of all skill levels.
Nestled in the charming town of Derby, with a population of just 208, Blue Derby boasts one of the world's premier mountain bike networks. With a whopping 125km of purpose-built trails catering to riders of all ages and expertise, this is the ultimate destination for mountain biking in Tasmania. What's more, Derby is incredibly family-friendly, offering a wide range of cafes and eateries. If you're seeking some solo riding time, the Derby Mini Shredders babysitting service has got you covered.
For those not keen on biking, explore the St Columba Falls walk, Bridestowe Lavender Farm, or indulge in some local brews at the Little Rivers Brewing Company. If adventure calls, don't miss the chance to try quad biking for an added thrill.
Just south of our home town, St Helens, on the charming East Coast, you'll discover the Flagstaff trailhead, home to the St Helens Mountain Bike Trails. This network offers a stacked loop network comprising 66km of trails and eight loops meandering through the slopes. Whether you dream of shredding downhill, enjoy cross-country flow, or seek a day of family pedalling fun, St Helens Mountain Bike Trails delivers.
Take an easy ride with the kids on Pearla or Eagle Eye or catch a shuttle to Loila Tier and experience Old Salty Dog, a gravity-fed ride through ridgelines, granite outcrops, and moss-covered gullies. For a longer adventure, explore the 27km Dreaming Pools trail, a wilderness journey through the backcountry with refreshing rock pools along the way.
The headline ride further north is the epic 42km Bay of Fires Trail, offering a rare chance to mountain bike from the mountains to the sea. Starting high on the Blue Tiers, this stunning ride descends through rainforests, climbs over granite boulders, and emerges on the white sand at Swimcart Beach in larapuna / the Bay of Fires area.
Located just 10 minutes from Launceston, Kate Reed Reserve is a hidden gem that provides a variety of trail options for young daredevils. The park offers multiple trails, a skills area, and a track loop. If your family craves a challenge, opt for the black diamond detours. Some trails here feature sharp corners and rocky terrain, so it's advisable to do some research to find the perfect trail for your family's skill level.
The trails are well-marked and suitable for families, but unless you’re a local, it can be a bit challenging to find the trail head to begin with – this link might be helpful!
The Kate Reed Reserve is a great chance to test your skills before heading to St Helens and exploring the east coast trails!
Nestled by the River Tyenna, in southern Tasmania, and surrounded by majestic mountains, Maydena boasts over 30 mountain bike trails suitable for both families and advanced riders. Regular bus services make it easily accessible for riders and sightseers alike. The trails vary in difficulty, with green (beginner) trails running from top to bottom.
Maydena also offers coaching and group skills sessions for those
looking to refine their skills. And while you’re there, don't forget to explore
the nearby Mount Field and Maydena walking trails for more outdoor adventures –
you may even spot a Tasmanian platypus. There are food and beverage options galore,
including a pub with a beer garden, The Local Restaurant and The Summit Café,
all selling fresh Tasmanian produce with cracking views.
Hollybank is one of Tasmania's newer mountain bike parks, and it's gaining popularity fast. With beginner and intermediate loops, as well as a great pump track, it's ideal for families with varying skill levels. Located only 20 minutes from Launceston, it's a convenient option for families with younger kids.
The park offers a mix of terrains, including outcrops and natural obstacles along the paths. If you're up for a wilder mountain biking experience, be sure to check out the thrilling Juggernaut trail, known for its rollercoaster turns. Hollybank is also conveniently situated next to Hollybank Treetops Adventure, providing a great alternative if you're in need of a biking break.
Whether you're seeking the thrills of Blue Derby, the tranquillity of Kate Reed Reserve, or the breathtaking views of St Helens (obviously our favourite), there's a trail for everyone. Tasmania has so many mountain biking options, we haven’t even had a chance to mention the new trails at George Town (north of Launceston) or on Tasmania’s West Coast. So, gear up, hop on your bikes, and get ready for an unforgettable family mountain biking experience in the heart of Tasmania's natural beauty. Happy trails!
